Skjaldborg Cinema

Skjaldborg cinema is located on Adalstraeti 27 (See on map) and is generally known as Skjaldborg. It was built as an initiative of local political independence party Skjöldur who felt the town needed a community hall. The first gathering in the much anticipated community hall was held on May 23rd 1935 and given the name Skjaldborg.

In 1980 vast renovations of Skjaldborg were carried out and the building became a cinema with the best affordable screening equipment at the time. In 2003, cinema screenings had been dormant for several years and the building was again in a critical state. The Lions Association decided to save Skjaldborg and reinstate regular cinema screenings in Patreksfjordur.

Lions members carried out extensive renovations on the building and once again there was an operating cinema at the heart of the town.

The collaboration between the Lions Association and Skjaldborg - Icelandic Documentary Film Festival has been successful since its first edition in 2007 and when the Lions members embarked upon financing a DCP screening system the festival organisers joined forces on the ambitious task. Companies and institutions were approached and a crowdfunding initiative was run where countless individuals contributed. In 2016 the new digital screening system was installed.

We believe it is a unique initiative that a volunteer organisation such as the Lions Association runs a cinema like Skjaldborg in a small town like Patreksfjordur. What a beautiful cultural community service they provide!
